The Sulzer RT-flex60C engine was introduced as part of the electronically-controlled Sulzer RT-flex low-speed marine diesel engine series. The first RT-flex engine, a 6RT-flex58T-B, passed its shop test in January 2001, and the first RT-flex60C engine successfully passed its official shop test in Wärtsilä's Trieste factory in October 2002.
The RT-flex60C is part of Wärtsilä's RT-flex series, which features electronically-controlled common-rail systems, distinguishing it from the earlier, camshaft-based Sulzer RTA engine series. It sits within a range of RT-flex engines with varying bore sizes, including the RT-flex50, RT-flex58T-B, and the larger RT-flex96C.
This model is chosen for its electronically-controlled common-rail fuel injection and exhaust valve actuation, which provides benefits such as smokeless operation at all speeds, lower fuel consumption at part load, and improved maneuvering, including very slow running capability.
