The Wärtsilä Sulzer RT-flex68T-B engine type was announced in January 2004, building upon the Sulzer RT-flex common-rail system which began development in 1993. The first series-built RT-flex production engine, a Sulzer 6RT-flex58T-B, entered service in September 2001.
The RT-flex68T-B is part of the broader Sulzer RT-flex series, which introduced electronically-controlled common-rail systems for fuel injection and valve actuation to low-speed marine engines. Within this range, it sits alongside models with varying cylinder bores, such as the RT-flex50, RT-flex58T-B, RT-flex60C, RT-flex84T-D, and the larger RT-flex96C.
