Engineering Knowledge

General engineering guidance only — it may contain errors. Always follow the equipment's own documentation and the judgement of a qualified engineer.

Push up length is double checked, but pressure on pump 1 is zero.

Release the pressure on pump 1. Pump 2 pressure should be kept for one hour. Check the push up length to ensure it remains the same.

Push up length is double checked, but pressure on pump 2 is zero.

Release the pressure on pump 2. Pump 1 pressure should be kept for one hour. Check the push up length to ensure it remains the same.

Hydraulic nut is difficult to tighten.

Tighten the hydraulic nut with a spanner, applying slight torque.

Air plugs in the rudder boss or hydraulic nut are leaking after oil started to leak.

Reinstall the air plug in the rudder boss. Repeat the same oil filling sequence for the hydraulic nut and reinstall the air plug.

Pressure on pumps 1 and 2 is below the necessary push up length.

Increase pressure on pumps 1 and 2 until the coupling has reached the necessary push up length. Ensure P1 is at least 37.0 N/mm² and P2 is at least 29.0 N/mm². The maximum allowable pressure is 57 N/mm².

Rudder stock or rudder blade is damaged or overheated during removal.

Open the covers in the rudder blade by grinding. Carefully observe to prevent damage or overheating.

Chain blocks are not tightened during rudder blade removal.

Connect four chain blocks to the rudder blade. Ensure they are tightened.

Securing device and bolts are not tightened during rudder stock removal.

Remove the securing device carefully without applying hot jobs around the nut/rudder stock. Use a slugging spanner to release the hydraulic nut. Provide a gap of 8 mm between the rudder boss and the hydraulic nut.

Oil filling plug is not removed during pump 1 dismantling.

Dismantle pump 1 and replace the oil filling plug.
