The UEC60LS is part of the long-running UE engine series, which has been developed and manufactured by Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) and its predecessors, including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), since 1910. The UEC60LSE-Eco-A2, a specific model within the UEC60LS series, has seen updates as recently as June 2026.
The UEC60LS series is a key part of J-ENG's lineup, particularly within their 'LSE' and 'LSH' series, which are known for ultra-low fuel oil consumption. The UEC60LSH is a successor to the UEC60LSE type engine, and J-ENG is also developing an ammonia-fueled version, the UEC60LSJA, and a methanol-fueled UEC50LSJM, indicating a continuous evolution of the LS series towards alternative fuels.
The UEC60LS series, particularly the UEC60LSE-Eco-A2, is highly regarded for its low fuel oil consumption, high reliability, and ability to operate continuously at low loads without needing special component changes. It is also designed to meet IMO NOx Tier III regulations, with the option of J-ENG's Low Pressure EGR System.
