Did you know
- Wärtsilä's Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) system has a long heritage, with the first design dating back to 1903. Wärtsilä acquired John Crane Lips, a leading global supplier of marine propulsion systems, in 2002, and the CPP systems are often referred to as Lips controllable pitch propellers. In 2014, Wärtsilä introduced its latest development of large CP Propellers, based on the E-hub type, offering greater efficiency and reduced environmental impact.
- The CPP system is one of Wärtsilä's primary propeller solutions, alongside their Fixed Pitch Propeller (FPP) solutions. While FPPs are generally chosen for ocean-going vessels with consistent operating conditions, CPPs are designed for vessels with more demanding and varying operational requirements.
- The Wärtsilä Lips CPP is chosen for its ability to adjust blade pitch during operation, allowing for optimal efficiency across varying operating conditions and ship speeds. This adaptability provides excellent maneuverability, dynamic positioning capabilities, and can lead to significant fuel savings and reduced emissions.
| Model | Engine Power Range | Propeller Diameter | Key Feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPP | Approximately 500 kW and up (no upper limit in principle) | 1000 mm and up (largest 9400 mm) | Adjustable blade pitch for varying operating conditions, high maneuverability, dynamic positioning capabilities, fuel efficiency. |
| Fixed Pitch Propeller (FPP) | All power levels | 1000 mm to 12000 mm | Optimal efficiency for a wide range of speeds and power densities, robust, tailor-made design for specific applications, often used for ocean-going vessels with stable operating profiles. |
