Lilley & Gillie, a company with roots dating back to 1812, introduced the SR4 magnetic compass (which the Type B is a variant of) in 2010. This design marked a significant advancement from traditional brass compasses.
The Type B is part of the SR4 Class A compass series, which is Lilley & Gillie's premium offering, designed to meet SOLAS requirements for vessels of any size. It sits alongside other models like the Mk2000 and Mk2020S outfits, which are binnacle systems that can incorporate the SR4 compass. The Mk2002S is another sibling model, intended for smaller commercial vessels under 150 GRT.
The Type B (SR4) compass is distinguished by its polycarbonate compound body, which eliminates the leaking issues common in traditional brass compasses, preventing air bubbles that can hinder accurate readings. Its transparent construction also allows more light to reach the compass card, improving visibility.
