- Alfa Laval has a long history in centrifugal separation, with the first continuous centrifugal separator developed in the late 1870s. The company delivered its first oil separator to the US Navy in 1917. The PureNOx technology was developed in cooperation with MAN Diesel & Turbo, with Alfa Laval signing a cooperation agreement in 2012 to develop a water treatment system for MAN's exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. The original PureNOx system was approved by MAN Diesel & Turbo in 2015, ahead of IMO Tier III NOx standards taking effect in January 2016.
- The PureNOx series includes several models, such as PureNOx Prime, PureNOx LS (Low Sulphur), and PureNOx HS (High Sulphur). PureNOx Prime is a streamlined version of the original PureNOx system, designed for low-sulphur fuel operation. PureNOx LS and HS further optimize the technology based on fuel sulfur levels, with PureNOx LS being optimized for low-sulphur fuel and PureNOx HS for high-sulphur fuel in combination with a SOx scrubber.
- The PureNOx system is chosen for its ability to treat water in Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems, which is a key technology for complying with IMO Tier III NOx emission standards. It utilizes centrifugal separation to remove soot and compounds from EGR scrubber water, protecting the engine and allowing for the discharge of clean water overboard in compliance with IMO criteria.
